The heart of a Dog

This past weekend Jax gave us all a pretty enormous scare.

As Nate and I were moving furniture a good hour away from the house we received a call from Barbara, who was visiting for the weekend and was quite upset and crying.  Through the sobs we were able to make out the following, Jax had jumped off the balcony and they wernt sure if he was going to make it.

Apparently Parker and Jax had been "playing" with a squirrel that was walking across the power line above our balcony.  After a bit of time of just staring at the dogs and getting them all worked up the squirrel took his nut down the wire and threw Jax into a real tizzy.  Jax then jumped up on a table and then over the ledge of the balcony falling about 20 feet onto concrete bellow.

Brent found him less than a minute after the fall after hearing the thump and crying sounds.  Parker walked back in stunned a bit as Brent ran downstairs to bring Jax up to the sofa and find an emergency hospital to take him too.  As Jax lay still as can be with blood coming from his mouth Parker sat by his best friend and watched him as he lay stunned and in pain.

Needless to say, Barbara and Brent were torn apart as they rushed their baby to the hospital and awaited the news.  After a bit they were relieved to hear he had a cut on his lip, a chipped tooth, and a possible bruised lung but nothing else.  No concussion, broken bones... nothing.  They needed to keep him for a few more hours to monitor him and examine the xrays further so us humans and Parker stayed in the house and waited and worked on calming each other down.

That whole evening Jax laid around (mostly on the cold tile floors) and Parker acted as his shadow.  Everywhere Jax went, Parker went too.  Anything Jax did, Parker did it too.  You could tell there was a lot of concern for his best friend.

That night as we all went to bed, Nate and I were kept up for hours.  Parker started panting hysterically, not able to catch his breath and his heart was racing a hundred miles an hour.  After frantically trying to figure out what he needed (at wee hours in the night) I looked online to determine if he needed to be taken to a clinic in the middle of the night and decided he was feeling the results of the day.  He was having panic attacks and going through post traumatic stress.

We finally got him to settle down and sleep.  The next morning after being reunited with Jax- who was moving around and looking really good all things considered, the boy seemed to be on the road to their own recoveries.  After Jax left to be seen by his doctor, Parker started to freak again.  We ended up going to the vet and gave him anxiety meds that really seemed to help.  It was heart warming and sad to see how effected Parker was by seeing his poor friend in pain.  After it was all said and done Jax came out with no internal bruising, no broken bones, no concussion... nothing.   A true miracle.
